Getting started

How do I add my first word?

Click the + Add word button from the dashboard or Words page. You can also import an existing Anki deck (.apkg file) or a CSV file from the Words → Import screen.

Do I need an account?

Yes — Language Den is a web app and your account keeps your vocabulary synced and accessible from any browser. Sign-up takes about 30 seconds.

Which languages are supported?

Any language you can type. There is no fixed list. Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Thai, Welsh, Swahili, Esperanto — it doesn't matter. If your keyboard can produce the characters, Language Den can teach you the words.

AI features

Does Language Den use AI?

Yes, and it's built in — no API keys or setup required. When you add a word, Language Den automatically fills in the translation. You can also generate full flashcard content (definitions, example sentences, conjugations) with a single click.

Is there a limit on AI usage?

AI translation and flashcard generation include a generous fair-use allowance each month — about $2 of provider cost per account. Normal study won't hit it. You can always add and edit flashcards manually if you ever reach the allowance.

What AI model does it use?

Language Den uses large language models via an AI gateway. The specific model may change as better options become available, but the experience stays the same for you.

Can I attach images to flashcards?

Yes. Language Den includes built-in image search powered by Unsplash. Search for a photo, click to attach — no API key needed.

Importing vocabulary

Can I import from Anki?

Yes. Language Den imports .apkg files directly. Export your deck from Anki as an .apkg file, then use Words → Import words → Anki deck. Your cards come with you.

What CSV format does the import expect?

A CSV with a word column is enough — you’ll map columns on the next step. Translation and part of speech are optional. Any other columns are stored as metadata.

Can I add words in bulk without importing?

Yes — the triage queue lets you accept or skip words you've added, and Notebook lets you capture words rapidly and process them into flashcards later.

Spaced repetition

What algorithm does Language Den use?

Language Den uses FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler), a modern open-source algorithm that outperforms the SM-2 algorithm used by traditional Anki. It adapts your review intervals based on your actual performance over time.

What do the review ratings mean?

  • Again — you forgot the word; it will be shown again soon
  • Hard — you remembered, but it was difficult
  • Good — you remembered correctly with reasonable effort
  • Easy — you remembered effortlessly; the next interval will be longer

How many cards should I review per day?

Whatever feels sustainable. Even 10 minutes a day of consistent review will compound significantly over months. The algorithm handles scheduling — you just show up.

Data & account

Where is my data stored?

Your vocabulary data is stored securely on our servers. It's accessible from any browser as long as you're signed in to your account.

Do you use analytics or tracking?

We show no ads and do not use third-party analytics vendors. We do run first-party product analytics (Ahoy) on our own servers to understand sign-up and learning funnels. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

Can I delete my account?

Yes. Go to Profile & Settings and use the delete account option. This permanently removes all your data from our servers.

Can I export my vocabulary?

Yes. On the Words page click Export CSV, or go to Profile & Settings → Data export. The file includes every word in your active study language and is compatible with CSV import.
