Generating Flashcards

Built-in AI flashcard generation — no API key or external account required.

How it works

LanguageDen uses a server-side AI integration (via OpenRouter) to analyse words and generate flashcard content. Generation is included with your subscription.

AI translation and flashcard generation include a monthly fair-use allowance (about $2 of provider cost per account). Normal study will not reach it. You can always create and edit flashcards manually.

Generate for one word

  1. Open the word detail page.
  2. Click Generate flashcards.
  3. Wait a few seconds while AI creates cards for the types matching the word's part of speech.
  4. Review the results. Edit or delete any card you do not want.

LanguageDen picks flashcard types from a fixed list by part of speech — for example nouns include image based and listening cards. AI writes the prompt and answer for each type.

When a word was saved from the Reader, generation prefers the Passage excerpt for cloze and example sentences.

Generate in bulk

On a Source section page, click Generate flashcards to queue generation for all words in that section without cards. This runs as a background job — continue using the app while it processes.

Monitor running jobs from the jobs indicator in the navigation bar.

After a CSV or Anki import, Word Triage is usually the better way to pace new cards — generate selectively rather than all at once.

Add flashcards manually

  1. On the word detail page, click Add flashcard.
  2. Choose a flashcard type.
  3. Enter the prompt and answer.
  4. Save.

Image flashcards

For nouns, AI often creates an image based card. Use Add image or Replace on that card to search and attach a photo.

Edit generated content

AI output is a starting point. Edit awkward prompts or unhelpful example sentences on any card. Edits persist until you choose Regenerate flashcards.
